Top Gear announces the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 'Best Electric Car 2021'.
This is the first global media accolade for the all-wheel drive, five-door Taycan Cross Turismo model, and brings the tally of titles for the all-electric Porsche sports car to more than 50 worldwide. In a neat symmetry, Top Gear was also the first magazine to present an award to the Taycan saloon, hailing it as its ‘Car of the Year’ in 2020.
With the renowned reputation of its sister saloon in mind, the Top Gear writers concocted a thorough programme to assess the all-round ability of the Cross Turismo. A journey of many hundreds of miles across the UK from east to west concluded with a high-speed assault on a closed road of loose surfaces; the ‘Sweet Lamb’ special stage made famous from the Wales Rally GB.
In keeping with its brief to offer adventure, electrified, the new Taycan Cross Turismo was more than equal to the challenge. Awarding the Porsche its prize for ‘Best Estate’ and ‘Best Electric Car 2021’, the magazine commented; “It’s one of those cars that sweeps along effortlessly, carrying speed easily, lightly and deftly, the sort of speed that leaves passengers clueless as to how quickly they’re travelling. There’s no heave around corners, no loss of body control and most remarkably of all, no tension in it. I literally cannot think of another car that blends speed and comfort as well as this, another car that you could load four people into and drive so rapidly yet serenely.”
Separately, BBC Top Gear TV star, Paddy McGuinness, heralded the Porsche Taycan as his favourite electric car of 2021. The show co-host commented; “...because it’s electric you don’t expect it to feel like a proper Porsche, and then you get in it and it does. And then you start driving it and it really, really does. It’s a car I just loved driving, so much I asked if I could keep it a little bit longer.”
